Behind “Take Me Back”
Every had one of those moments where you take a look around you and realize that all of the people who love you are nowhere to be found? Not because they left you, but because you left them in the dust. Realizing you screwed up pretty bad, you turn back, head hanging low, feet dragging on the ground, knowing that you can do to make earn back their love. When you get back to them, you know that there are only two possible outcomes. Either your apology is ignored and you’re left on your own again, or they welcome you back with open arms, just happy that you’ve made it back. “Take Me Back” is about the more fortunate of those possibilities. It’s about wrongs made right and love restored. It’s the most relieving thing in the world when someone offers forgiveness. It says that you’re so much more than the mistakes that you make; it’s a second chance, or a third… or fourth; it’s the most generous thing that someone can do for you. So I wrote a song about it. And I’m sure I’ll write about it again.
Take Me Back (written by Jameson Elder & Cooper Brown)
Said my final goodbyes
Turned and walked away
Leaving nothing behind
But your love locked in a cageSeeking shelter I found another who’d take my hand
only to discover that I am just half a manSo you’re taking me back again
from my heart down to my skin
with this second chance
Loneliness won’t be my friend
Take me back againDiamonds set in your eyes
All my fears are washed away
Won’t you Save me tonight
and bring me back to graceI’ve been holding out for much too long
I keep thinkin I’m too far goneSo you’re taking me back again
from my heart down to my skin
with this second chance
Loneliness won’t me my friend
Take me back againI’ve finally made amends
I’m not losing sleep and
I begin to find the place where I belong -

A Little bit about The Home I’ve Never Known
A few of the folks who have heard the songs that are on The Home I’ve Never Known (which drops on April 10th… there’s my shameless plug) have asked where the songs come from. Typically, my answer is “I don’t know, it just popped into my head”. In some cases this may be entirely true, but usually I just really feel like getting into the long explanation of where the song came from.
So I thought I’d take some time and answer that question about a few of the songs from The Home I’ve Never Known. And I guess it only makes sense to start with the title of the record.
The Home I’ve Never Known came out of a conversation I had with a friend a couple months ago. We were looking through the lyrics to the songs on the record, and every single song talks about home in some way. That completely caught me off guard. It really confirmed something for me, that I still haven’t really found home.
I’m a wanderer by nature, never really content to stay in one place for too long. In a lot of ways I’m constantly searching, I think we all are. Searching for those places, those people who will make us feel like we’ve finally arrived home. It’s not an endless search, I’ve met several people who seem to have found their home, I’m just not there yet. Don’t get me wrong, this is not some sort of mopey, sad journey. I actually think it’s pretty exciting! These songs depict a piece of my journey to find home. Who knows, it could be just around the corner.
